Another Successful Masters Games

Another Port Pirie Pura Light Start State Masters Games has come to an end, but it will be fondly remembered by all involved. With around 1150 competitors, in over 30 sports, the event continued to showcase Port Pirie's ability to host major events in South Australia, while also highlighting the popularity of Masters Games around Australia. Well done to all competitors, accompanying persons, officials, tourists and families who competed in the Games, there were some fantastic results throughout the event, leaving hundreds of happy participants with fond and cherished memories of the Games in Port Pirie - which is what the event is all about.

Some of the highlights the 2012 Games were;

  • 92 year old Archer Gordon Pawson OAM, the oldest competitor in Games, winning a gold medal in Archery.
  • The Port Noarlunga Mountain Biker, who rode his bike 250km to the Registration Centre to register, before continuing on to his accommodation in Melrose in the same day.
  • The lifeball competition growth, and visit from national trainers Colleen and Brian Lord, who showcased the sport in the lead up to their presentation of Lifeball as a sport at world congress in Glasgow this year.
  • Mark Davis returning as the Games Ambassador in 2012, who continued to not only increase his rapport with the community, and touch competitors with his friendliness and people skills, but compete in the Ranges Basketball team.
  • The Port Pirie Regional Council showdown in the Dragon Boats, where the deciding race was declared a 'dead heat', with the elected members declared gold medallists over the Port Pirie Regional Council staff team on a count back.
  • The introduction of the extremely successful sport of Dirt Circuit, including a hot lap with Mark Davis, who clamed had the 'time of his life'.
  • Bryan Hennig who competed in the Olympics for Australia in the Basketball, is still having a go at age 72.
  • Four sports with over 100 registrations, and 12 sports increasing their numbers from past Games.
  • The Old Fella and Kym Koster entertaining the crowd at the Sports Dinner, while the flag handover to Orroroo followed by entertainment by the talented Danny Hooper was a standout at the Closing Ceremony.
  • Ambassador Peter Flower, after smoothing himself in 'deep heat', pulled a muscle at the Athletics, and soon realised his 'deep heat' bottle was actually sunscreen. Although he has pulled up with a sore driver muscle, he didn't get sunburnt!
  • The support of Pura Light Start throughout the Games, and the participation of their staff in a number of sports including Sailing, Dragon Boats, Lifeball, Dirt Circuit and Basketball.

Without the support of Major Sponsor Pura Light Start, and the fantastic volunteers of Port Pirie, the event wouldn't have performed to the high level it did, and has continued to do so since the year 2000. Over 600 volunteers came together to make the event happen, and must be congratulated for their dedication and love for the Games.

The Games has once again come to an end for another two years, however everyone at the Games is looking forward to the opportunity at putting anouther Games bid in for the near future.

Merchandise and photographs are still available. For official Games merchandise, call the Port Pirie Regional Tourism & Arts Centre on 08 8633 8700 or 1800 000 424 (Toll Free). For official photographs, click here and find the Masters Games in the gallery section.

Thanks again, and congratulations to everyone on another successful Port Pirie Pura Light Start State Masters Games!

Registering for Dragon Boats

Due to technical difficulties with the fee structure of Dragon Boats on the online registration software, all Dragon Boating team registrations must now be completed by hand, via the registration booklet, or over the phone with staff at the Port Pirie Tourism & Arts Centre on 1800 000 424.

The registration software currently charges a sports levy fee higher than it is supposed to be, when multiple events within categories are entered. To eliminate this issue, and ensure the appropriate fee is charged, Masters Games admin will enter competitors manually into the electronic system.

All competitors charged the incorrect sports levy fee will be issued with refunds.

Registering for Dragon Boats is still really quick and easy through the Registration Booklet, where by completing the necessary pages, and sending this to the Tourism & Arts Centre (PO Box 464, Port Pirie SA 5540), your entries will be manually entered. The booklet is available on the website under the 'Registrations' tab, or can be requested by mail by calling the Centre.

To avoid disappointment, register today, or call the Port Pirie Regional Tourism & Arts Centre on 1800 000 424 for more information.
